About riding in United Kingdom
The United Kingdom offers some of the most varied riding terrain in the world. Scotland's Highlands deliver a sense of true wilderness — vast open moorland, ancient drove roads, and sea lochs that appear without warning around a hillside. Wales has the Brecon Beacons, the Cambrian Mountains, and the Pembrokeshire coast. Northern Ireland has the Causeway Coast and the Antrim Plateau. And across the whole of the UK, a dense network of public bridleways — thousands of miles of legally protected riding routes — gives equestrians access to countryside that would otherwise be impossible to reach.
The horses vary as much as the landscape. Welsh cobs and Mountain ponies in Wales; Highland ponies and Connemaras in Scotland; Irish Sport Horses and Thoroughbred crosses across Northern Ireland. Every breed here carries the marks of its landscape.
Riding is possible year-round, though the UK's Atlantic climate means wet weather is always a possibility. Late spring and early autumn deliver the best combination of light, temperature, and ground conditions. Serious moorland and mountain riding is summer-only — winter conditions can be severe at altitude.
