About riding in Egypt

Egypt is one of the most dramatic riding destinations on earth. Whether you are cantering past the Great Pyramids of Giza at sunrise, threading through the narrow lanes of Luxor's West Bank, or riding out into the open Saharan desert, the landscape carries a weight of history that few other places can match. The horses here are predominantly Arabians and Arab crossbreeds — a breed shaped by this very terrain over thousands of years, wiry and tough, at home in the desert heat.

Riding in Egypt rewards the adventurous. The infrastructure is basic by European standards, and the experience varies considerably between operators. The best stables offer genuine insight into local life and access to routes that bypass the tourist crowds entirely. The worst are simply tourist operations with tired horses. Choosing carefully — and reading first-hand reviews — matters more here than almost anywhere.

The riding season runs from October to April. Summer temperatures in Upper Egypt (Luxor, Aswan) regularly exceed 40°C, making riding dangerous and unpleasant. Winter evenings can be surprisingly cold in the desert. The sweet spot is November to February: clear skies, cool mornings, and a landscape at its most vivid.
